Will California's Ban on Freelance Work Lead to Blue State Turnaround?
Capital Ideas | Kerry Jackson
February 10, 2020
The backlash over California’s Assembly Bill 5, legislation that robs workers of their freedom, was likely not expected by lawmakers. They’re accustomed to an electorate that agreeably goes along with whatever policies they impose, no matter how invasive. The response to AB5, which outlaws, with a few exceptions, freelance and independent contract work, has been an outlier. There’s a lot of anger over the law.

A Vaccine for the Wuhan Coronavirus? Don't Hold Your Breath
Issues and Insights | Henry I. Miller, M.S., M.D.
February 12, 2020
. . . As the Wall Street Journal noted in a Jan. 30 editorial ([link removed]) , “It took scientists 20 months to develop a SARS vaccine to test on humans, but the NIH hopes to have a vaccine ready for human trials by April.” If they can meet that timeline, good for NIH, but then its sibling agency, the Food and Drug Administration, gets into the act. And that’s a problem.

Medicare for All Could Mean Doctors for None
Wall Street Journal | Sally C. Pipes
February 10, 2020
Professional groups representing doctors are buying into Democratic plans to remake health care—and thereby acting against the interests of their members. The American College of Physicians, the second-largest organization of U.S. doctors, recently came out in support of either a public option or single payer.

Beyond the New Normal? Not.
Right by the Bay | Rowena Itchon
February 13, 2020
Back in 2017, concerned over the sclerotic growth of the U.S. economy, PRI published a series of studies titled Beyond the New Normal ([link removed]) by economist and PRI senior fellow Wayne Winegarden. Up until that point, annual real GDP growth averaged just 1.9 percent since 2001. Many economists, resigned to our nation’s economic fate, called this level of GDP growth the “New Normal.”

Bankruptcy Deadline May Not Save PG&E from State Takeover
Right by the Bay | Evan Harris
February 12, 2020
Reeling from multiple massive state wildfires that its actions likely triggered, Pacific Gas & Electric, or PG&E, filed ([link removed]) for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this time last year. The investor-owned utility faces a June 30, 2020 deadline to come up with a plan to come out of bankruptcy, address the estimated ([link removed]) $25 billion in settlements, and win state approval. As the utility makes progress ([link removed]) toward refinancing, PG&E is fighting with every level of government to stop a state takeover.

The 2020 Election and Barriers to Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth
Many observers have credited the ongoing U.S. economic boom to the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back regulations and reform the tax code. Meanwhile, progressives in California and other states are pushing job-killing legislation like California’s Assembly Bill 5, which outlaws, with a few exceptions, freelance and independent contract work.
Dr. Wayne Winegarden, PRI’s Senior Fellow in Business and Economics and the Director of PRI’s Center for Medical Economics and Innovation, will share challenges and solutions from his new study on entrepreneurship “Entrepreneurship as a Pathway to the American Dream.”
