I'm Susan Corke, and as the director of the SPLC Intelligence Project, I lead a team of investigators, analysts and writers who work to prevent, track and expose the activities of hate groups and other far-right
extremists. We also seek to counter and remedy the harms their hatred inflicts on communities. Our team's work helps make the SPLC the premier U.S. organization monitoring and fighting the activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists including the Ku Klux Klan, white nationalists, the neo-Nazi movement, antigovernment militias and others.

I'm writing to you today with an important update about hate in America. The SPLC is turning to our most dedicated supporters to express our deep concern about the harm white nationalism is causing

White nationalists are now openly embracing violence to turn back the clock to the days when white men held all the power. Last year, we tracked 1,225 hate and extremist groups. We can't afford to stand by while they erode our civil rights and dismantle our democracy.

Our recently released Year in Hate and Extremism Report shows a stark, disturbing rise in white supremacy. As I'm sure you know, in the two years since the Jan. 6 insurrection, far-right activists are increasingly embracing volatile rhetoric that breeds political violence.

Hate and extremist groups are evolving their strategies. In 2022, the hard-right movement mobilized?hate and extremism from the mainstream to main street ([link removed] ). Extremist actors - often armed - brought hatred into our daily lives and public spaces, protesting LGBTQ+ inclusion, reproductive rights and classroom discussions of systemic racism.

When their strategies change, ours must change too. So, in 2022, we created a new DataLab to better track hate across the digital frontier. We established a unit focused on prevention of extremism using public health models. Our investigative reporting led the national media in exposing extremist activity and influence. Our analysts helped policymakers, including the bipartisan House Jan. 6 Special Committee investigation, hold hate perpetrators accountable.
