Fox Chapel
Pride in the Park
We had a great time earlier
this month at Fox Chapel's Pride in the Park at Allegheny RiverTrail
Park, talking to constituents about state services and state
legislation that can help protect the rights of LGBTQ+ people here in
Pennsylvania, like HB300, the PA Fairness Act. Thank you to all of the
performers, vendors, and participants for coming out and making this
event such a wonderful experience, as always!
Union
Organizing Week (June 4 - June 12)
During
National Union Organizing week, we celebrate and highlight the people
organizing their coworkers to improve their working conditions and
have a voice in the workplace. I will always stand with the brave
organizers fighting to make things better for everyone.
Have
you considered unionizing your workplace but need help knowing where
to start? Check out the recent installment of our “Demystifying
Harrisburg” series: Demystifying Unionizing Your Workplace. Hear
a conversation with different union representatives, Starbucks, and
Coffee Tree Roasters organizers, and discuss how they began their
efforts, lessons learned, what to watch for, and how the public can
support workers.

Pittsburgh
Water & Sewer Authority receives Federal Water Infrastructure
Finance and Innovation Act Loan
Recently I
joined
Mayor Ed Gainey,
Rep. Summer Lee,
Rep. Sara Innamorato, and EPA Assistant Administrator for Water
Radhika Fox to celebrate a $52.4 million Federal loan to the
Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority that will go toward their
Water Reliability Plan investments.
This funding will be used
to support projects at the Highland II Reservoir, the Bruecken Pump
Station, and the large-diameter pipes that connect the two facilities.
This federal investment bolsters a recent PENNVEST loan that PWSA
received to continue this work.
Ross West
View EMSA Testifies in Harrisburg
Thank you to
Greg Porter from Ross
West View EMSA for traveling to Harrisburg on June 9 to testify in
front of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee on the crisis
facing our EMS agencies. I applaud everyone who testified at the
hearing for coming forward to discuss the ongoing issues that
departments across the Commonwealth are facing, including the current
challenges with the Bureau of EMS.
Clean Slate
Event in Sharpsburg
Thanks to
Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts,
District Judge Matt Rudzki, Rep.
Mandy Steele, and attorney Max Cotton from the
Allegheny County Public Defender Office for co-hosting the
Expungement of Records and Clean Slates Workshop with me last week at
the
Sharpsburg Community Library.
About a dozen people
attended the event and had a chance to learn and ask questions about
the Clean Slate Act, expungements, limited access cases, and
pardons.
It is
Fishing and Boating Season!
June 3-11 was
National Fishing and Boating Week! If you're heading out to enjoy the
three rivers this summer, remember these easy steps to staying safe
while enjoying yourself:
- Always wear a life jacket--
it's the law for all children 12 and under.
- Don't drink and
boat-- choose a designated boater.
- Have a float plan-- let
someone know when you plan to be out on the water and when to expect
you back!
- Check the weather-- don't let summer storms catch
you off guard!
State
Veterans’ Homes Week
The Department
of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), honored their residents,
family members and staff with week-long festivities during the annual
State Veterans’ Homes Week June 11-17, 2023! I had the pleasure
of celebrating the 25th anniversary of Pittsburgh’s Southwest
Veterans Center in May where we recognized the service of some of
their long-time employees.
During State Veterans’
Homes Week residents enjoy a variety of activities and entertainment
like carnivals, musical and comedy performances, barbecues and
picnics, military ceremonies, and petting zoos. These activities
benefit the residents by increasing social connections and promoting a
more active lifestyle. Each home’s activities are paid for by
their own Resident Welfare Fund. You can donate to these funds online
at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov
and give back to those who have given our country so much!

LIHEAP
Crisis Cooling Program
This summer the PA
Department of Community & Economic Development is running a
LIHEAP Crisis Cooling pilot program. This program uses a portion of
the money for the
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to provide
installation, repair, or replacement of air conditioning units to
low-income Pennsylvanians. Prior to this pilot, LIHEAP funds were only
available for heating assistance and if the pilot is successful,
Crisis Cooling assistance could become a permanent LIHEAP program!
To be eligible for the LIHEAP Crisis Cooling Pilot in Allegheny
County, a renter or homeowner must have received LIHEAP
Crisis assistance or weatherization
assistance in the past 12 months.
The pilot is
administered by Action
Housing, Allegheny County’s weatherization
agency for the pilot. Action Housing has already sent their LIHEAP
Crisis and weatherization assistance recipients letters asking them to
participate, but if you participated in either of these programs with
another agency, you should call Action Housing at 412-281-2102 to
enroll. Applications will be accepted through August 18, 2023.
