John, we are running out of time.
A recent study published in Nature Sustainability points to a terrifying future: With the current climate crisis trajectory, nearly half of the world’s population will be forced to relocate by the end of the 21st century.
The study is largely based on previous research that defined “climate niches” — zones of the planet where scientists predict it will be most hospitable to human life in the peak of the climate catastrophe. Essentially, it will be like living in a real-life “floor-is-lava” game: Stay within a niche, you’re in the clear. But if you live outside of a climate niche, you’ll face food scarcity, extreme heat, and higher mortality rates.
AVOID A CLIMATE REFUGEE CRISIS » [link removed]
We’re already seeing the prologue of the impending climate refugee crisis in Florida, where home and flood insurance are rising faster than in any other state. Since 2015, insurance rates are up 57% for Floridians — almost triple the national average. Whether it is being priced out of their own homes or losing them thanks to storms or sea level rise, Florida residents will begin relocating in droves.
John, we have only two options to handle this incoming crisis:
1. Prepare to make accommodations for a massive climate migration surge, or...
2. Drastically cut our carbon emissions and avoid these two compounding disasters.
John — if we don’t drastically reshape our energy and environmental policies to combat climate change meaningfully, we will continue to see more communities be uprooted in the coming years. That’s why we’re working around the clock to support our SEEC members in Congress as they fight to save our planet. Will you pitch in a contribution to our efforts?
