The first Pride march was held 53 years ago this month to commemorate the anniversary of Stonewall and the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. Since then, June has been recognized as Pride Month to honor, celebrate, and protect the contribution, achievements, and rights of the queer community.
We have made progress since 1969, but time and time again since then, right-wing extremists spouting hate have tried to silence and censor LGBTQIA+ voices, and these efforts have only intensified. The trans community has been particularly affected by the onslaught of hateful rhetoric and destructive stereotypes that have been used to justify discriminatory legislation. From healthcare to education, employment to housing, they encounter discrimination at every turn. Enough is enough.
The ACLU is currently tracking 491 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills across the country and we regret to say that two of them are from our very own home here in Washington state.
These discriminatory pieces of legislation send a dangerous and loud message that being a member of the LGBTQIA+ community – being different – is something to be ashamed of, and that could not be further from the truth.
