Juneteenth

Yesterday--and all week--we at NCLCV are celebrating Juneteenth.

June 19th, or Juneteenth, is a celebration of Black resilience, independence, and community that commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston Bay, TX received the news of the Emancipation Proclamation, over two years after its initial passing on January 1st, 1863. While Juneteenth is a newly recognized federal holiday, Black communities across the nation have celebrated it for decades.158 years later, Black voters still face systemic, racist discrimination. While Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to protect voters from racist and discriminatory voting practices, the Supreme Court has recently been rolling back these protections, leaving it to state legislators to protect the right to vote.  

Just a few weeks ago, NC Senate Republicans introduced legislation to further restrict voting access, which will negatively impact marginalized communities, especially Black communities that have fought against voter suppression for decades in North Carolina.
