Hi,

Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Pramila Jayapal just introduced legislation
that would finally impose an ethics code on the Supreme Court, and ban
federal judges from owning individual stock.^1

The Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act has been introduced during a
time public trust in the Supreme Court is at an all time low. It’s not
hard to see why people are skeptical about the Court.

Every week, we get more information on the depth of Clarence Thomas’
corrupt relationship with billionaire GOP mega-donor and billionaire
Harlan Crow. Ethics scandals have rocked EVERY SINGLE ONE of the
conservative justices.Congress must act now to stop this corruption and
restore integrity to the Supreme Court.

“As the country’s highest Court is plagued by scandal after scandal, it’s
clear that we can no longer stand by as judges and justices take advantage
of their position to build wealth and power at the expense of our
country,” said Rep. Jayapal in a statement. “We deserve an impartial Court
that isn’t beholden to special interests and personal agendas. No one is
above the law, not even a Supreme Court justice.”^1

The Supreme Court is the only court in the nation that is not subject to a
binding code of conduct. The Judicial Ethics Act would finally require
SCOTUS justices to follow an ethics code, ban all federal judges from
owning conflicted assets like stocks and securities, strengthen
restrictions on judicial gifts and privately funded travel, overhaul the
broken recusal process, and create new mechanisms for judicial
accountability.^2

These new rules are particularly relevant to Clarence Thomas, who has
repeatedly broken disclosure laws, but is facing no legal consequences.
Chief Justice John Roberts has been unwilling to voluntarily subject his
court to standards of conduct, and has obstructed Congressional attempts
at investigating ethics violations.^3

The overwhelming majority of Americans are frustrated with the corrupt
courts. The legislation was unveiled with new polling showing that 90
percent of voters support binding the Supreme Court to a code of ethics.^4
Congress must start restoring faith in our courts and pass the Judicial
Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act.
