Dear SPUC supporter,

I write to you today with sorrow in my heart, about the tragic, tragic death of Baby ‘Lily’ – a victim of a late-term abortion.

Lily’s mother obtained abortion drugs past the legal limit and ended her life at 8 months gestation.

There are two significant things that mark out this precious baby from the other 600+ babies that are killed EVERY DAY by abortion.

1. Lily was the subject of a criminal court case that has put her mother behind bars for 28 months.

ALL ABORTIONS ARE WRONG. All babies have the right to life from the moment of conception.

But an abortion of a baby at 8 months – well beyond the limits specified in abortion law – exposes the complete inadequacy of the existing ‘safeguards’ for women and babies.

Lily’s mum lied to BPAS about how far along her pregnancy was, saying that she was 7 and a half weeks pregnant (she was actually 32-34 weeks).

This was not only to obtain an illegal and extremely late-term abortion, but also to obtain the home abortion drugs past the 10-week legal limit.

  • The 10-week limit for DIY abortions without supervision is not just a matter of law, but also one of safety (the safety of the mother, that is – obviously not for the unborn child).

All this is the inevitable result of the DIY abortion scheme. The laxity of the ‘safeguards’ means that a mother can simply lie and obtain the drugs.

But BPAS are hardly innocent lambs in this situation. For a start, nobody is preventing them from implementing better ‘safeguards’. They’re not obliged to do the bare minimum required by the law, especially when it’s clear how open to abuse these 'safeguards' are.

In fact, BPAS and the other Abortion Magnates are profiting from the DIY abortion policy which they pushed forward with so much determination.

  • BPAS forcefully campaigned for abortion drugs to be sent to women in the post.
  • BPAS did not require, in the case of Baby Lily, an ultrasound or any physical examination to take place, to assess the woman’s wellbeing and stage of pregnancy.
  • BPAS left Lily’s mum to administer these drugs to herself alone, with no medical supervision or support.

SPUC warned from the beginning that this dangerous scheme would have precisely these horrific consequences.

Now that this policy has led to nearly full-term babies being killed well past the legal limit, abortion giants like BPAS are attempting to exploit this tragedy by calling for abortion to be decriminalised, and removed from the oversight of the law.

And this leads us to another tragic distinction between Lily and her fellow victims of abortion:

2. Baby Lily is destined to be used as a political pawn for ABORTION DECRIMINALISATION – by the very abortion providers who clamoured to legalise DIY chemical abortions, and who gave the drugs to her mum.
BPAS doesn’t seem to be stopping and considering where their bloodthirsty agenda leads.

Rather, these calls for decriminalisation are the precise opposite of what is needed.

And Lily and her mum are being used by the abortion giants in order to achieve their grisly end.

But the good news is – the public aren't buying it. Take a look at the replies below, including from pro-choicers:

It is vitally important that we stop this decriminalisation menace in its tracks, and bring the fight to the other side.

SPUC has defeated every previous attempt at decriminalising abortion. We now have to go into battle again, but with your help we can win this time too.

I will tell you how we are responding at SPUC – and how YOU can help.

But first, I want to tell you why it is so vital to fight decriminalisation before it gets its foot in the door.

Earlier this year, I told you about the Assisted Suicide lobby’s ‘tried and tested method’ of using devolved administrations – like those of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Isle of Man – as ‘Trojan Horses’ to push their wicked agendas.

The idea is that once one of these devolved administrations has capitulated to their demands, the collapse of opposition at Westminster will be sure to follow.

As predictable as ever, the Abortion Empire is using the same method as their assisted-death-loving colleagues.

  • They are pushing for abortion decriminalisation in Scotland, supported by the new Scottish First Minister, Humza Yousaf.

This is the foot in the door they need to put their pressure on Westminster.

Under the current Abortion Act, killing an unborn child is still a criminal offence unless legally specified grounds are met. In most cases, the time limit for abortion is 24 weeks.

But our opponents in Scotland want to do away with the 24-week age limit and remove ALL grounds under the Act, so that abortion is available on demand anytime until BIRTH.

The abortion lobby wants the British public to accept killing unborn children as normal and safe for women.

What will happen if abortion is decriminalised in the UK?

‘Decriminalising abortion’ means repealing those sections of the law that make it illegal – which would make the provisions of the Abortion Act irrelevant.

It would be a mass deregulation of the abortion industry allowing:

  • Abortion on demand
  • Without medical supervision
  • In any place
  • For any reason.

So who benefits from this?

It’s no surprise that pushes for abortion decriminalisation have been coming from BPAS itself.

Abortion is a huge business.

To protect its business interests, BPAS appears prepared to go to great lengths to convince the British public that abortion decriminalisation is acceptable.

The impact this would have on unborn babies and their mothers would be devastating:

  1. More babies killed

When BPAS launched its campaign to decriminalise abortion in 2016, it denied that this would lead to an increase in the number or rate of abortion.

But this is false – every time abortion regulations have been relaxed, more abortions have taken place.

After the ‘emergency’ and ‘temporary’ introduction of DIY chemical abortions in 2020, an astonishing 228,627 abortions took place in England and Wales in 2021.

That’s an increase of 7,637 precious infants killed in the womb before they could see the light of day.

  1. Abortions up to BIRTH

When then-CEO of BPAS, Ann Furedi, appeared on the TV programme Loose Women in 2017, panellists were visibly uncomfortable with her suggestion that abortion should be allowed up to birth.

But if abortion is decriminalised, abortions could take place for ANY reason and at ANY time.

  1. Baby girls targeted for abortion

On the same programme, actress Denise Van Outen challenged Ms Furedi on whether abortion was acceptable on the grounds of sex.

Van Outen was clearly disturbed by Furedi’s answer that it's ‘always down to the woman’.

While Ms Furedi’s extremist views are out of step with most of the British public, they are shared and openly supported by several highly influential UK organisations.

Forms of abortion decriminalisation have been endorsed by:

  • Royal College of Gynaecologists & Obstetricians (RCOG)
  • Royal College of Midwives
  • British Medical Association (BMA)
  • Mumsnet
  • Humanists UK
  • Amnesty International

Prof Wendy Savage, who at the time of the interview sat on the BMA Ethics Committee, signed a letter claiming sex-selective abortion is ‘not gender discrimination’ as that term ‘applies only to living people’.

  • When the then-head of the RCOG, Lesley Regan, led calls for abortion to be decriminalised, she said it should be treated no differently from other ‘medical procedures’ - including something as simple as removing a bunion.

Handing over power to people who effectively constitute the abortion industry in this country would be highly irresponsible

  1. Women’s Safety

Contrary to claims made by our opponents, if abortion is decriminalised, women would NOT be safer.

In reality, when abortion regulations are relaxed, more women are put at risk

Freedom of Information (FOI) requests revealed that after the ‘full’ DIY chemical abortions were permitted at home during Covid, ambulance call-outs linked to DIY abortion pills rocketed by 64% that year.

  • Some ambulance services saw such calls double in 2020.

A study found that over 10,000 – or 1-in-17 – women who used pills-by-post-abortion services in 2020 suffered severe side effects that required hospital treatment.

Of those women:

  • 5.9% required treatment because of incomplete abortions with retained body parts
  • 2.3% were treated for haemorrhages (heavy bleeding)
  • 3% required surgical abortion after abortion pill failure.

Is this any surprise when BPAS’s record is so absolutely appalling?

In a shocking admission, the Government accepted that in 2020, nearly two-thirds of UK abortion clinics failed to meet safety standards.

Three BPAS abortion clinics were put into ‘special measures’ and served with enforcement notices in November 2021 after the Care Quality Commission gave them all ‘inadequate’ overall ratings, including for safety.

Then, of course, we remember that BPAS’s safeguards are so inadequate that they believed that a 32-34 weeks pregnant woman is only 7.5 weeks, and thus sent her the abortion drugs.

Do we really want to give abortionists MORE freedom and LESS regulation?

And yet they will try to use Baby Lily's heartbreaking death to achieve this.

Our opponents will pounce on decriminalisation faster than you can possibly imagine. This would be the stepping-stone they need for their decriminalisation victory.

BPAS and allies like the BMA, RCOG and the Royal College of Midwives would pressure MPs at Westminster to follow suit and put thousands more unborn babies and their mothers at risk of injury and death.

But even while most British people are horrified by this radical and rabid thirst for abortion, many feel that they cannot voice or even hold opinions about abortion in public...

… yet.

We have to bring the fight to the other side.

I have just today come out of a LONG meeting with our legal advisors – and I hope to let you know very soon what we can do for Baby Lily.

But in the meantime, by using Baby Lily’s death to push for decriminalisation, the Abortion-Industrial Complex is playing a dangerous game.

The abortion bosses thought that the public reaction would be to oppose those who call for abortion to be unlawful.

But as you saw above, much of the public is starting to realise that the bad guys here aren’t pro-lifers or UK law, but the powerful, rich abortion industry itself.

This abortion industry underestimated the extent to which The Great British Public would rally around Baby Lily, lamenting and mourning the tragic killing of a baby at eight months in the womb.

And you can see the lightbulbs going on everywhere. Because…

  • There isn’t much difference between a baby at eight months in the womb, and one who has been born.
  • And there isn’t much difference between either of them and a baby at six months in the womb…
  • … Or at four months…
  • … right back to conception itself.

This is why SPUC knows we are on to a winning strategy with our relentless focus on the humanity of the unborn child. The horrendous truth about Baby Lily’s death and all the other babies killed under Britain’s abortion law – must be brought home to the British public.

ONLY SPUC and SPUC SUPPORTERS can do this.

Only SPUC has a network of tens of thousands of supporters and activists who can be mobilised at a moment’s notice, and put the kind of pressure on MPs that only voters can.

At the end of the day, our politicians depend on us – not the other way around.

SPUC’s political lobbying power has been decisive before, and can be decisive again – but only if we can outfight the wealthy abortion behemoth.

SPUC now has 56 local branches, all of which are dedicated to getting the message out to their local communities, but we need more than this. We need branches covering every constituency, from Anglesey to Ipswich, St Ives to Orkney.

But building and maintaining an army of activists, and providing them with the tools they need to win, cannot be done without cost.

And unlike the Abortion Goliath, who can just drop a line to their powerful commercial and governmental allies to help foot the bill, we are dependent on YOU.

Will you help FIGHT decriminalisation and support SPUC’s other life-saving work?

Donate
Crucial donations of £20 and £25 and £50 and £100 and £250 and £500 help SPUC maintain our fight to PROTECT all the precious babies – just like Baby Lily – whom the abortion industry has in their sights.

Only with gifts like this can we haul these shadowy abortion technicians into the light of day.

Donate
These gifts help us challenge powerful members of the UK abortion lobby like BPAS, the BMA, RCOG and Amnesty International and their deadly decriminalisation plans.

Larger gifts of £1,000 or £5,000, or £10,000 or more are also vital. They provide the financial clout to go even further and take legal action through the courts where appropriate.

Without your support, it’s impossible to stop abortion decriminalisation and save tens of thousands of unborn babies.

Thank you for standing by these beautiful unborn babies and their mothers.

Yours in defence of life,

PS – High inflation continues to push up SPUC’s running costs.

The cost-of-living crisis is affecting many of our donors (especially those with families to support), and we are seeing a worrying drop in donations.

Frankly, we too are looking at a financial squeeze unlike anything seen in recent years.

If things do not improve, then I and my senior leadership team will have no choice but to make some very difficult decisions about areas of SPUC’s work.

This financial crisis places SPUC at a further disadvantage to Britain’s biggest abortion provider BPAS, which can depend on the Government to fund its sordid activities and to see them through these tough times.

With your help, SPUC can continue our work, and deliver devastating blows at the foundations of the wicked Abortion Empire.

Without your help – I cannot say what will happen.

Please – contribute today if you can, so the vital fight for our babies can continue
