From image generators like DALL-E to the chatbot ChatGPT, artificial intelligence has experienced a boom recently — and journalists are beginning to grapple with what its new popularity will mean for the profession. While some have shared concerns that AI would replace human writers and riddle the internet with plagiarism and misinformation, the technology can also provide newsrooms with extra support, Gabe Bullard writes for Nieman Reports. In the piece, Bullard spotlights the ways AI has helped newsrooms expand their reach, better engage their audiences, and free up journalists’ time to focus more on their reporting. Yle in Finland and Le Monde in France have used AI to translate stories into multiple languages; at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, staff created an AI-generated newsletter that sent reader personalized recommendations. “If we think of AI as a support tool in a lot of these various arenas, we get a lot more mileage out of what AI can actually do,” Dalia Hashim, AI and media integrity lead at the Partnership on AI, told Bullard.

We hope to take the time to read the piece. And we also hope to hear from you: Has your newsroom experimented with AI? Share your story with us ([link removed]) and we might feature it in a future article.
