** Dear Friend,
On behalf of the Maine Climate Council, I’m excited to write today about future steps ahead for Maine’s plan for climate action, Maine Won’t Wait.
The Maine Climate Council is an assembly of scientists, citizens, bipartisan state and local officials, and business and nonprofit leaders who are charged under state law with developing a climate action plan for the state every four years.
The Council’s first plan, Maine Won’t Wait, was delivered to Governor Mills on December 1, 2020. The Council and its working groups are preparing to update this plan by December 1, 2024, starting with a kickoff meeting this September.

** The plan covers a wide range of strategies to prepare for effects of climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transition to clean energy, explore natural climate solutions, expand knowledge and awareness of climate science, and more.
There have also been many changes since the release of Maine Won’t Wait, notably the enactment of the Federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, which contain unprecedented funding and incentives for communities, individuals, and businesses to address climate impacts.
To help navigate these opportunities, we’ve published a comprehensive guide to both Federal and State climate incentives on the website for Maine Won’t Wait, www.maine.gov/climateplan.

** Further, on the state level, more than 140 communities are now participating in a new program – the Community Resilience Partnership ([link removed]) — which provides grants and technical assistance to assist towns, cities, tribal governments, and regional efforts with addressing local climate priorities. You can see a video about some of the exciting projects underway here ([link removed]) .
Recently, as well, the Council’s Equity Subcommittee ([link removed]) delivered a report (PDF) ([link removed]) to the Council that outlined ways of address historical inequities, ensure benefits from addressing climate change are shared equally across all communities and people in Maine, and ensure that underrepresented communities and voices are included in the upcoming climate planning process.
