Dear Colleagues,

As another challenging post-pandemic school year comes to an end, we’re pleased to share some of our recent work:

The Reading Revolution

Enthusiasm for the science of reading is exploding, fueled by parents, civil rights leaders, advocacy groups and the media in response to troublingly low scores on national reading tests and extensive learning loss during the pandemic. In our new report released today—The Reading Revolution: How States are Scaling Literacy Reform—FutureEd examines how states are tackling the massive task of redesigning reading instruction in thousands of schools, a rare but promising bipartisan campaign.

Covid-Relief Spending in California

Our recent deep dive into how California schools are spending their federal pandemic aid gave us reason for hope and cause for concern. The largest share of spending in the third round of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief fund is going toward academic recovery. But too much spending remains shrouded in broad categories that provide little transparency.

Private-School-Choice Webinar

I moderated a lively discussion earlier this month about the rapid expansion of state programs providing families with public funding for private schooling. We heard from Arkansas State Sen. Breanne Davis, lead sponsor of the Arkansas LEARNS Act; Doug Harris of Tulane University; Patricia Levesque, chief executive of ExcelinEd; and FutureEd Policy Director Liz Cohen.

You can read our recent analysis of the new private-school-choice initiatives here.

We continue to track leadership moves in the education sector in The Churn, and to provide a listing of upcoming in-person and virtual education events. Send your events and leadership news to [email protected], and we’ll be happy to post them.

Best wishes for a restful summer break (if you’re fortunate enough to get one).

Tom
