In the Turkish city of Alasehir, once known as Philadelphia, three ancient pillars stand out from the modern roads and buildings surrounding them. The remains of the 7th century Basilica of St. John, these pillars are reminders not only of the former Christian presence in the Islamic, modern city of Alasehir, but of the words of the risen Christ to the church in the ancient city of Philadelphia—“the one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God” (Revelation 3:12a). 

The city of Philadelphia was plagued with catastrophic earthquakes. In AD 17, one such earthquake left the city and much of the surrounding area in ruins. Christ’s promise to make the faithful members of the church pillars in His temple speaks to a long-lasting, certain hope—a very different reality than the uncertain lives they lived in Philadelphia.
