Friends -
We are going to force a vote on a war powers resolution in the Senate today to prevent war with Iran.
I’m co-sponsoring this resolution with Senator Tim Kaine, and a handful of Senate Republicans have already expressed their public support for this action.
If we pass this resolution, it would prevent Donald Trump from taking any further military action against Iran without Congressional authorization or a truly imminent threat – which did not exist before General Soleimani’s assassination in January.
We’ve introduced this as a privileged resolution, so Senator Mitch McConnell cannot block us. He has to allow us to debate and vote.
Donald Trump’s actions have made our country less safe, but passing this resolution would help us correct our course and de-escalate tensions with Iran.
We have a real chance to get this through the Senate, too. If we keep public pressure on my Republican colleagues, then I believe we can get enough of them to defy Donald Trump and ensure we prevent war with Iran.
We can do this. We only need a simple majority to pass our resolution. Thank you for helping us keep up the pressure.
