Dear John,

Tax season is upon us, and my office can be a helpful resource. If you need help preparing and filing your tax return, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers programs that provide free tax help. There are various locations across North Texas that have IRS-certified volunteers ready and able to help qualifying individuals.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers will provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

Additionally, if your income is $69,000 or below, you can file your taxes for free using the IRS’ Free File program. More information can be found at https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free.

If you would like to receive free tax help, visit https://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/ to find IRS-certified volunteers near you. You can also find a checklist of documents and items to bring at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/checklist-for-free-tax-return-preparation

And as always, if you encounter any issues with the IRS, you are welcome to call my office at 972-972-7949 where we can inquire on your behalf and help you resolve your issue. The last day to file your taxes is April 15, 2020, so make sure to take the time to get the help you need this tax season.

If you would like to contact me, please send an email, or call my office. I also invite you to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram so you can keep up with the work I am doing for North Texans and other upcoming events.

Sincerely,
