News From The Week Of July 29 - August 2, 2019

Hi, Friend:

I’m filling in for Rachel today while she meets with our Board of Trustees to plan AU’s future. And speaking of futures, I want to take a moment to highlight the contributions of two of AU’s departing legal fellows, Alison and Claire, as they enter the next chapter of their professional journeys.

Claire was an integral part of AU’s efforts to fight Trump’s Denial of Care Rule, which would invite medical professionals of all stripes to deny health care to patients on religious or moral grounds. She was there every step of the way as AU and our allies filed lawsuits to stop this abhorrent rule from going into effect.

Alison was instrumental in AU’s lawsuit against the Trump administration’s rules that would allow employers and universities to use religion to deny employees and students access to birth control. She recently argued the case in front of a federal judge in Indiana and wrote a blog post about her own personal story of overcoming attacks on her reproductive rights as a college student: www.bit.ly/AU-Alisons-Story

Fighting these legal battles is hard work, and under the current administration, attacks on our religious freedom are downright unrelenting. That’s why we’re grateful to have talented team members like Claire and Alison – as well as supporters like you – giving all they can to support the separation of religion and government. While we’ll miss these amazing women, we’ll soon welcome a new legal fellow who’s anxious to pick up the baton and run with it.

Thanks for all you do,

Coming Soon To A Public School Near You – ‘In God We Trust’ Signs:
'In God We Trust' is not something conjured up by the founders. It first appeared on coins in the North during the Civil War. It was used sporadically into the 20th century and was not codified as the nation’s official national motto until 1956 during the Red Scare.

True Patriotism, Like True Faith, Can’t Be Forced:
Support for mandatory Pledge recitation has dropped – it stood at 77 percent as recently as 2008 – but it’s discouraging that after all this time, many Americans still don’t grasp a simple fact: forced patriotism, like forced prayer, is an oxymoron.

House Members Demand Accountability For D.C. Voucher Plan:
The Washington, D.C., voucher program, pushed by right-wing groups like the Heritage Foundation, was approved by Congress in 2004. It was supposed to be a five-year experiment.
