Friends —
I got my first chance to serve the people of Massachusetts when I was first elected to represent my district in the state house. (But really, my first job where I served the people was when I was serving up frozen treats from my ice cream truck! Yes, that’s really me.)
From the state house I went on to be elected to the US House of Representatives, and finally to the US Senate. And throughout my career, I’ve made it my mission to hold fast to my values and deliver real, progressive change for the people I represent.
When those on both sides of the aisle denied the newfound evidence of a changing climate, I stood up for our future and called for a clean, green revolution, and continued on to lead the introduction of the Green New Deal years later.
Since the 2008 financial crash that wrecked our economy, I've helped secure millions in funding for new jobs and economic opportunities in Massachusetts, while using my committee positions to hold the big banks accountable for the pain they brought to working families.
When LGBTQ+ rights were still opposed by a majority, I voted against the homophobic Defense of Marriage Act and opposed ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ I was an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act, and just a few weeks ago I introduced the Transgender Bill of Rights in the Senate.
When natural gas explosions devastated the Merrimack Valley in 2018, I brought a Congressional field hearing to Lawrence to hold Columbia Gas executives accountable, and passed the Leonel Rondon Pipeline Safety Act law to strengthen pipeline safety by closing regulatory loopholes.
And the thing is, through each of these big wins and challenging times, I was never alone. I had the power of a progressive movement on my side, pushing the cause of justice forward and making change possible. Now, I’m calling on that movement to help me again today.
We are coming up on our FEC fundraising deadline at the end of the month, after which our numbers will be made public. There’s still time for us to submit a strong FEC report that proves that our movement is still strong. So please:

I’m proud of my track record and my career of service, but there’s still work to be done. Let’s crush this FEC fundraising deadline and show that we’re ready to do so much more to deliver progressive change.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
