THIS Tuesday, February 18, is the Wisconsin Spring Primary Election. We are just "days away" from a critical statewide race for Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice that comes with a ten-year term of office. Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly (incumbent) is facing off against two challengers.

NOTE: There's a special-election primary also on Feb. 18. This is the first step in filling the vacancy in the 7th Congressional District created after Sean Duffy resigned last September. Wisconsin Family Action PAC has endorsed Republican Tom Tiffany in this race. Read the press release HERE. The general election for this race is Tuesday, May 12.

A Few Legislative Updates...

 

MARIJUANA
The drumbeat is increasing for legalizing marijuana in Wisconsin in some form. Bills have been introduced to legalize the drug for medicinal purposes and to decriminalize possession of less than 28 grams, the equivalent of about eighty joints. Neither bill has had any movement in the state legislature this session because Republicans are in control of both houses and don’t see the issue as much of a winner for them going into an election cycle. However, some Republican legislators have indicated they are willing to consider at least legalizing medical marijuana.
 
Julaine Appling says, "This is another example of elections having consequences because if liberals were in charge of the legislature right now, marijuana would already be fully legalized in our state. The governor has already sent that message. We need to take a hard look at what’s happened in other states where the drug’s been legalized. It’s not good. In fact it makes the drug problem worse."

VACCINATIONS
Last week, several Democrat state legislators introduced a bill that would allow minors who are at least 16 years old to be vaccinated without parental consent. Two other vaccine-related bills were introduced, one of which would allow dentists to administer vaccinations. The other appropriates funds for DHS to purchase vaccines sufficient for all children in the state. Earlier a bill was introduced that removes the personal conviction exemption for parents not wanting to vaccinate their children. None of the bills have had any action to date.
 
The bills will go nowhere this session, because elections have consequences; and conservatives currently are in the majority in both houses of the state legislature. But the bills definitely show where liberals want to go, including keeping parents out of this important medical decision. How ironic that in a public school, officials can’t even administer a Tylenol without parental permission.
