You know better than anyone else: Washington, D.C. is an important part of our country. It's our nation's capital, the hub of our federal politics and government, and is home to some of our country's most meaningful landmarks. It's also a place that 700,000 people like you call home. You and your neighbors pay federal taxes, serve on juries and in the military, and provide for your families everyday. Which is why it's outrageous that D.C. residents aren't fully represented in our government. In the United States of America, with a democracy that's based on freedom and every voice being heard, you're essentially disenfranchised. We hear you. This is unfair and we're joining D.C. in the fight to change it. HR51, which is currently being debated in the House, is the crucial bill that would grant D.C. statehood. Not only is D.C.'s status as a district unfair to its residents, it's a blow to progressive power. While whole states with even fewer residents than D.C. are represented by two senators, D.C.'s diverse population has no representation whatsoever in the U.S. Senate, contributing to the conservative stranglehold on that body. I'm sure I don't need to remind you where conservative control of the Senate has gotten us: right-wing Supreme Court justices, massive tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy, and the acquittal of a clearly guilty president. Just imagine: With statehood, you'd be able to elect two U.S. senators and a voting member of the House, and control your own laws and budgets. Our federal government would finally work for you, as it should, instead of conservative senators deciding your fate with their own agendas in mind. We're with you, D.C. -- your statehood is a priority that more Americans need to care about. It's time we make statehood a reality. We've created a helpful explainer page that you can share with your community so they understand how important this fight truly is. This is America. All of our citizens, regardless of their zip code, should have the right to vote for their representation in Congress. Until everyone in our nation's capital is given equal representation, we'll be leaving the door open for unchecked conservative power to run rampant. We're with you in this fight.
