Supporter — throughout our country’s history, people of color have had to fight every step of the way for our right to vote. Against all obstacles, voters of color turned out in last year’s midterm elections. Our Defend the Black Vote program helped drive turnout in several key states, sending 4 million texts to 1.7 million potential voters in 15 states. But in response, extremist authoritarians on the Far Right are now doing whatever they can to pass laws and adopt procedures that will make it harder to vote — particularly for Black voters. In Georgia and Florida, and all around the country, state legislatures are passing bills designed to suppress voting rights. The first month of 2023 saw a record 150 restrictive voting bills introduced by legislators in at least 32 states. That’s why, this Juneteenth, People For the American Way is renewing our fight to Defend the Black Vote, fight voter suppression efforts, and work to achieve record Black voter turnout in critical states across the country.
People For’s Defend the Black Vote program is a nonpartisan effort to ensure that historically disenfranchised voters are able to fully participate in democracy and cast their votes. That means mobilizing millions of Black men ages 18 to 60 against right-wing misinformation and ongoing attacks on voting rights. Our goal is clear: improve democracy by bringing about more representative elections with greater participation of Black male voters. Because we have the power to make our system work for all of us — but only if we vote. I hope you’ll take a moment to learn more about the movement to Defend the Black Vote. >> Thanks for all that you do, Svante Myrick
