Dear friends,
Today is Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, a holiday that marks the day when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865 – two and a half years after the proclamation was issued.
Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and perseverance of the African American community throughout our nation’s history. However, today also serves as a reminder of our past failure to uphold the promise of freedom and justice for all.
So on this Juneteenth, let us not only celebrate the incredible progress we have made towards fulfilling that promise, but also recognize the important work that still lies ahead. While we’ve made a lot of progress, Black Americans still suffer from distinct disparities in health, education, employment, and other critical areas.
Whether it’s closing the education gap, addressing the maternal mortality crisis, or reforming the criminal justice system, we have a lot more work to do to create a more perfect union.
It won’t be easy, but I know we can overcome these challenges and achieve a future that truly guarantees liberty and justice for all – and I pledge to continue fighting everyday in Congress to help bring that future to fruition.
Happy Juneteenth,
Lori Trahan
