Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, honoring the day our Black ancestors took a huge step forward in the journey from slavery towards freedom in America—a journey that continues to this day.
While Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, has its roots in Galveston, Texas—marking the day when the news of the Emancipation Proclamation was formally communicated across the state—it has continued to be a long-treasured expression of Black joy, Black pride and Black liberation. Juneteenth offers us an opportunity to recognize the truth of history and reaffirm our call to action for all of us to strive for freedom. |
