SEPI SHYNE FOR CONGRESS
Hey there,
Today we celebrate the moment 158 years ago on June 19th, 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the liberation of all enslaved people.
Juneteenth was a turning point in our nation’s struggle for equality and justice for all. It offers us a symbol of hope and the possibility of liberation and deep, transformative change.
But Juneteenth didn’t mark the end of our struggles with equality, it marked the beginning. Juneteenth didn’t end white supremacy, it didn’t end racism, nor did it end the institutional violence against Black people in this country.
The vicious legacy of slavery and racism still exists today in the deep inequities in our country, in the justice system, in police violence, and in the erasure of Black stories in our country’s narrative.
So today, as we celebrate this incredible moment of progress in the struggle for liberation, let us also commit ourselves to continue the fight that began in 1866. Let us work together so that one day our nation will finally fulfill its promise of true equity and justice for all.
With gratitude,
Sepi Shyne
