Today, we celebrate Juneteenth. Second Independence Day. Freedom Day.

Juneteenth is a time for celebration, a time to rejoice in freedom, and to lift up Black culture. But it is also another reminder that justice delayed is always justice denied.

Over a century later the battle against White Supremacy has not ended. The wounds of slavery have not fully healed.

I am proud to sit on the California Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans. Since formation, the task force has heard dozens of hours of testimony from over a hundred witnesses and held hours of public comment. Next month, we’ll provide recommendations to the California Legislature on how to address the still-present effects of slavery.

While I am hopeful for the work the taskforce is doing, I know our work is not done. We have seen true freedom denied time and time again.

Today, and every day, I am committed to fighting for true freedom for all.

Happy Freedom Day, Community!
