JOHN,

Today is Juneteenth, a day to commemorate the end of slavery in America. On this day in 1865, the news of emancipation reached Galveston, Texas, and the last enslaved people in the Confederacy were freed. As we remember this historic moment, we must also confront the inequity and racism still present in our nation today.

Two years ago, Juneteenth was finally declared a federal holiday. This was a meaningful step in the right direction, but there is still so much work to be done to recognize our nation’s historic wrongs and actively support Black Americans. While our nation outlawed slavery over a century ago, we are still in the fight against the systemic injustices that remain.

Let’s reflect today on our past and continue working towards a better future — ensuring that we are an accepting and fair nation, advocating for each and every American.

In solidarity,
Seth
