John,

Today, I am joining Americans across the country in celebrating Juneteenth – a commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved peoples in the United States.

Two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, Union troops landed in Galveston, Texas, and the last remaining slaves were set free. Juneteenth is a major milestone in the struggle for freedom and equality for all Americans.

I am proud to commemorate this momentous occasion with a deep reflection on our history, our progress, and the work still ahead of us as we strive to end systemic racism and inequality.

It has been two years since Juneteenth was made a federal holiday. This was an important step forward in recognizing a historic moment. But we must follow this with real action to address the inequity Black Americans and people of color face in this country.

In Congress, I am dedicated to fighting for justice and equity. This includes working to pass federal voting rights legislation that ends partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression, making Medicare for All a reality to ensure everyone has quality healthcare, and funding our schools so every child has access to a quality education regardless of zip code.

Today and every day, I encourage you to join me in reaffirming our commitment to this mission. The road ahead of us won’t be easy, but we are much stronger together.

I wish you a restful and happy Juneteenth!

Valerie
