What started in 1865 in Galveston, Texas has traveled through the whole country to mark a day where we celebrate Black history, culture, and progress. Juneteenth is not just a historical event, but a living reminder that the struggle for racial freedom and equality continues to shape our lives.
As a proud Baltimorean, Juneteenth holds a special place in my heart. Growing up in this resilient city, I have witnessed firsthand the ongoing fight for social justice, from demanding police accountability in the face of persistent cases of brutality to combating the effects of gentrification on marginalized communities. While we have come a long way, there is still much work to be done. The spirit of Juneteenth does not reside solely in the pages of history. It lives on in our daily lives, shaping the conversations we have, the actions we take, and the commitments we make.
But this Juneteenth, I am inspired to celebrate the rich tapestry of Black culture that permeates every corner of Baltimore and has shaped our state. Let us not only celebrate Black culture but also recognize the countless advancements that have been achieved. From the pioneers of civil rights movements to the trailblazers in science, technology, and academia, Black Marylanders have made invaluable contributions to our shared progress. In every corner of our state, we see the influence of Black artists, thinkers, and creators who have shaped our society. Our resilience, brilliance, and unwavering spirit continue to guide us in our pursuit of a more equitable future.
As we celebrate this Juneteenth, let us also acknowledge that it is inseparable from the essence of Maryland. Our state's history, traditions, and identity have been deeply influenced by the contributions of Black communities.
Together, we can ensure that the spirit of Juneteenth lives on, not just in words but in our daily actions, as we forge a path of unity, progress, and social justice for all.
