Juneteenth is a monumental moment in our nation's history and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Following the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st, 1863, not all enslaved people immediately found freedom. Juneteenth marks the day when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas received news that they were free. On the one year anniversary, freed people in Texas organized the first celebration of "Jubilee Day" (which became a federal holiday on June 17th, 2021).

While Juneteenth is a symbol of liberation for Black Americans, it is also a reminder of the legacy and continued efforts to uphold white supremacy and oppress Black people through police brutality, abject poverty, voter disenfranchisement, lack of access to housing and healthcare and more.

But none of us are well in a system that cares for some at the expense of others. Juneteenth is a reminder that "no one is free until everyone is free" and it is a day to recommit to the fight for Black liberation. Here are some ways to show up:

  • Get educated
  • Decenter whiteness
  • Give reparations
  • Support Black Owned Businesses
  • Buy Black-owned Books
  • Fight for Voting Rights
Detoxing from Whiteness Workshop

In collaboration with Black Women's Blueprint and Restore Forward I'm hosting a workshop this week for white bodied leaders called Detoxing From Whiteness.

!!!STARTS TODAY!!!

The call for white people to “do the work” is a serious one. Not just because of the historical and present, pervasive and persistent, embodied and systemic impact of white supremacy on Black and Brown people, but because it threatens our democracy, our planet and our humanity as a whole. White supremacy is bad for all of us.

This intensive is designed for well-meaning white people who are ready to reckon with how we’re implicated in the system of white supremacy and what it's going to take to detox our body/mind and heal our humanity.
