Hey John,
I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Ciara Walton, Chief Diversity Officer at Run for Something.
Today is Juneteenth, the commemoration of the emancipation of slaves in the United States. We respect the contribution of Black minds, hands, and culture in the creation of our nation’s foundation, while always remembering their lack of choice in the matter.
While the holiday marks the end of a painful chapter of our history, we still feel the echoes of that chapter across the country. President Biden declared Juneteenth a federal holiday only two years ago. We still have a ways to go when it comes to acknowledging, educating, and integrating the lessons learned from our history into our society and our political system – especially when the far right’s mission is to dampen and distort that history.
“We the people” means more now than it did when it was written. As our country grows with young and diverse people, our political representation and systems should reflect the people they are meant to serve.
Run for Something is as committed to our mission to recruit and support young, diverse progressive leaders today as we were when we began in 2017. We are committed to doing the work internally and externally to create progress, equity, and a political system that works for all of us – not just the few.
Don’t be a stranger on this journey, ok? We need you, too. Whether it is
running for state or local office to build that better future, encouraging a friend to run, volunteering for candidates, reading up on our work, or
sharing our message – thank you for showing up with us.
In this together,
Ciara Walton
Chief Diversity Officer
