John, happy Juneteenth!
This is the 3rd year Juneteenth has been recognized as a federal holiday, but the history of this celebration goes back 158 years.
On June 19, 1865 — two and a half years after Lincoln enacted the Emancipation Proclamation — federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the liberation of the state’s more than 250,000 enslaved people.
Those who were formerly enslaved broke out in celebration of their freedom and kept this celebration over the years on the day we now celebrate as Juneteenth.
Today, we celebrate the end of the fight for freedom from chattel slavery in the United States, and commemorate the continued fight for freedom and justice.
As a Black-led organization that centers Black, Indigenous and other people of color in our work, we honor our ancestors and follow in their footsteps as we continue the fight for voting rights and equal access to the ballot to achieve a more inclusive and reflective democracy for all.
