Friend,
Today is a celebration of independence, justice, and joy. But it also comes with the recognition that Black Americans continue to face inequality.
Now as a national holiday, Juneteenth marks the date that the enslaved people of Galveston, TX learned they were free — more than two years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. And although we have come a long way in our nation’s history, people of color — especially Black Americans — continue to face economic challenges, greater health risks, and a discriminatory criminal justice system.
We can honor the history of progress today with celebration and with the commitment to continuing the fight onward. That's exactly my commitment to you, team.
All Americans deserve the protection of equal rights. So today and every day, I advocate for the justice, peace, and equity that Black Americans deserve.
Have a safe and happy Juneteenth, friend.
