Today, on June 19 – Juneteenth – we commemorate the freeing of the last
enslaved people in the United States, which happened on this day in 1865 –
more than two years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation.

But even though slavery was officially abolished more than 150 years ago,
its legacy lives on and impacts Black people in America every day. Across
the country, Black and Brown people remain disproportionately likely to be
incarcerated in a criminal injustice system that is a remnant of the
slavery endured by their ancestors.

I introduced the People’s Justice Guarantee 2019 because I know that
transforming our criminal injustice system is inextricably tied to
dismantling systems of oppression and white supremacy in this country.

humanity and true justice. And I need you to join me. This Juneteenth,

The criminal injustice system isn’t “broken.” It is working exactly as it
was designed — to dehumanize and incarcerate Black and Brown folks. The
cruelty is the point. That is why it’s essential that we dismantle it and
build new systems that center the well-being of our communities.

The People’s Justice Guarantee lays out a new vision for criminal justice
that centers the voices of the people most impacted by injustice in
America.

So even as we celebrate the liberation of our enslaved ancestors, I will
keep fighting to realize the promise of that liberation — but I need you
with me.
