Dear John,

When I was 28, I almost died. I was nearly full term in a healthy pregnancy when I unexpectedly required an emergency cesarean section without full anesthesia. High blood pressure put me at great risk for serious complications.

As a Black woman, my story is not uncommon for people that look like me – Black people are 5 times as likely as white people to die from blood pressure-related complications during pregnancy.

We need to address the rights and real-life needs of Black women right now. We can start by asking our elected leaders to pass the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act. [[link removed]]

Today is Juneteenth. A day remembered as the first time in the United States where all Black people were recognized as free in the U.S. But our country still has a long way to go for Black people to be truly free from discrimination – and care is no exception.

Throughout and after my pregnancy, I had no support from my then employer. I worked myself to the bone while pregnant, fearing that my employer would refuse my request for maternity leave since it wasn’t legally required. After I gave birth, I was expected to return to work far too soon, while battling PTSD and postpartum depression.

The instability and uncertainty I felt was crushing. Unfortunately, this is the experience for too many Black women in this country.

As Black mothers, we deserve better – better health care, better paid leave, better options for caring for ourselves and our families.

The Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act will address the maternal health crisis by investing in better maternal health outcomes for Black moms and babies. Write a message to your representatives now to ask them to support this crucial legislation. [[link removed]]
