Johh – Happy Juneteenth!

Since 1865, Juneteenth has been a day of celebrating the Black community in America and reflecting on the ongoing fight for true equality in this country.

Juneteenth is not the day that President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It is the day that the final enslaved people were freed in Texas – more than two years later. Even after legal slavery had ended, freedom would not be a reality for many for a long time.

The fundamental rights that are so enmeshed in our country have always been conditional or even nonexistent for Black Americans. No person in the United States should have to fight for justice and equality, yet our history proves there has never been a time when Black Americans have not had to fight for their rights.

The work for equality isn't over, but we can all do our part to build a better future for everyone. While today is a day of celebration of the Black community and mourning the shameful reality of systemic racism, it can also be a day of decisive action.

I hope you and your community enjoy a safe and happy Juneteenth!

Thank you,

Diana
