Happy Juneteenth, John!
Also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, June 19th marks the day in 1865 that news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas.
Today, it serves as a powerful reminder of both the immense possibilities of American progress and the enduring legacy of inequality that continues to deny Black Americans true justice and equal opportunity.
Juneteenth offers us a chance to reflect upon the American promise of freedom and equality for all, while acknowledging that fulfilling this promise requires collective action and unrelenting effort.
President Biden established today as a federal holiday in 2021, and last year, Gov. Ned Lamont established Juneteenth Independence Day as a state holiday in Connecticut.
I encourage you to learn more about our newest holiday by participating in the many activities [[link removed]] taking place today to honor and celebrate Connecticut’s Black community .
May this Juneteenth be a joyous and meaningful occasion for you . Let it serve as a reminder of the progress we have made and as an opportunity to reaffirm our shared vision for a future that provides equal rights and opportunities for all residents of our state and our nation.
