John,
This Juneteenth, we not only commemorate the end of slavery, we reflect on the racist history of our nation and how our work to achieve racial equity is far from over.
I joined the board of Ruth’s List because like me, they are committed to diversifying the bench by recruiting and training Black women to run for state and local office. They understand that the only way to achieve equity is by elevating Black women to leadership positions so that our government is truly representative of the people it serves.
In honor of Juneteenth, I’m proud to highlight 31 Black women endorsed by Ruth's List who are currently serving in elected office. These women are breaking down barriers and making history in their communities.

City Councilwoman Jennifer Andreu, County Commissioner Marleine Bastien, Rep. LaVon Bracy Davis, Mayor Felicia Brunson, School Board Member Tina Certain, Senator Tracie Davis,
Leader Fentrice Driskell, Mayor Pro-Tem Angela Eady, School Board Member Caprice Edmond,
Vice Mayor Mary Estimé Irvin, County Commissioner Rene Flowers, Rep. Ashley Gantt,
Rep. Dianne Hart, Rep. Patricia H. Williams, County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, City Commissioner Linda Hill Anderson, Rep. Yvonne Hinson, Commissioner Tamara James,
Rep. Dotie Joseph, City Councilwoman Linda Julien, City Commissioner Nancy Metayer Bowen,
County Clerk of Courts Tiffany Moore Russell, County Property Appraiser Joyce Morgan,
County Commissioner Gwen Myers, Rep. Angie Nixon, Senator Rosalind Osgood,
Rep. Michele Rayner-Goolsby, Rep. Felicia Robinson, Rep. Geraldine Thompson,
City Councilwoman Kassandra Timothe, and Rep. Marie Woodson.
When I was growing up, there were few Black women in politics for me to look up to. After being one of the first Black women admitted to the Florida Bar, I went on to serve 16 years in the state legislature, first as a member of the Florida House and then in the Florida Senate. I was the first Black woman to become the Senate Minority Leader. I want young Black girls to look at women like me and be able to see themselves reflected in positions of power, so they feel there is no mountain too high to climb and no glass ceiling is unbreakable.
Happy Juneteenth,
Senator Arthenia Joyner
Board Member, Ruth’s List Florida
