There’s one patient whose story I will never forget, Friend.
Last year, while I was working at a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) mobile clinic in Guatemala, Raul* was left at our door. He lost his leg after falling off a train along the migration route through Central America, and he had nowhere else to turn.
As one of the few humanitarian organizations in the area, MSF is the only place many patients can go for care. That’s because MSF provides care regardless of race, nationality, politics, or legal status. We do not turn our backs on anyone in dire circumstances.
The day Raul arrived at our doorstep, my team and I rushed to coordinate with local organizations to find him a place to stay and contact his loved ones. It was a complex situation: We learned that he had fled his home and had no family who could care for him. But with time and effort, we were able to get him the help he needed.
Raul is just one of the many people who have been forced to leave their homes and travel the dangerous migration route—often on foot—through Central America and Mexico in search of safety. MSF’s mobile clinics provide much-needed medical care, psychological support, and supplies such as clean water for people on the move.
More often than not, our teams only have one chance to see patients along their journey. But a week later, I received an update—Raul was on his way to recovery and was learning how to walk again. He left us a note thanking us for opening our doors to him. He said, “Thank you for getting me to a safe place.”
I’ve worked with MSF for over four years. And in that time, I’ve witnessed the incredible impact we’ve had for people on the move and anyone seeking safety. Our work across borders is simple: To be there for patients as a trustworthy and reliable beacon of support, care, and safety.
Right now, as MSF responds to a confluence of crises, your steady support can help us make a difference.
