Celebrating our progress and acknowledging the work ahead!

Hi there,

The first full days of summer are welcomed by long days, cookouts and long-anticipated vacations, with the height of most American summer experiences filled with the sights and sounds of July 4th.

BUT there is perhaps a lesser known Independence Day celebrated every summer: June 19, 1865, or Juneteenth.

Juneteenth marks the day when Major Gordon Granger and his troops descended upon Galveston, Texas, to reinforce the message of emancipation and the rule of law, as found in the 13th amendment that ended slavery in the United States. It was Granger who finally freed the people of Texas.

Turn through the pages of history and we can see that although we have realized progress, a lot of work remains. The past few years, especially in the aftermath of George Flyod’s murder, have brought a new awakening of the disparities between African Americans and other communities, from police reform to imbalanced housing policy ([link removed] ) , and every other system in-between. Corporations and foundations made an unparalleled effort to address injustices; yet, the impact of such giving is still unknown and remains difficult to measure.

Juneteenth gives us a moment to take account of the progress and to remain steadfast in a commitment to a Just Economy for all.
