Dear John,

On this day 158 years ago, the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, finally received word that our nation’s Civil War had ended and that they were now free.

Growing up in Virginia during the 1970’s and ‘80’s, Juneteenth was not taught in schools, nor was it observed in any public way.

Following the protests over police brutality and racial inequity during the Summer of 2020, awareness of Juneteenth was reignited, eventually resulting in a new federal and Tennessee state holiday. I am very proud that Knoxville will also now rightfully observe Juneteenth as a citywide holiday from this year forward.

We do not have to look very far to see the lingering effects of slavery. From my focus on affordable housing, increased police accountability, inclusive & dynamic economic development, diverse representation in my administration, to supporting the African American Equity Restoration Task Force, I am committed to the difficult work of understanding our past in order to create a more just future.
