The medical care my child received should be available to everyone.

John,

I’m a single dad raising two precious sons. Parenting is both my greatest joy and deeply challenging. I know how fortunate I am to have the tools at my disposal to tackle those challenges for my sons.

On Wednesday, my oldest son lost feeling on the right side of his face as well as his sense of taste. He couldn’t smile or blink. I was able to immediately take him to urgent care, thanks to our health insurance, and we were then sent to the hospital.

After some testing, doctors determined my son had an inflamed facial nerve, and we were able to go home with a collection of medications that ensured the symptoms would subside in time.

My son Robert, on the right. Both of my boys are so precious to me.

It was an enormous relief to know Robert will get past this. And not once during the ordeal – from testing to diagnosis and treatment – was I made to worry about how I was going to pay for it.

I let my supervisor at work know I needed to step away for an emergency, confident that my employment and paycheck wouldn’t be impacted.

This is not the case for millions of parents and children in the United States.

Right now in America, over 4 million US children don’t have health insurance. Their parents have the added worry of potential financial ruin on top of their child being seriously ill.

In the United States of America we have turned basic medical care into a privilege and a luxury.

Parents should be equipped to get the best care for their children. No one should live in fear of an unexpected medical emergency. No one should be faced with the choice between financial ruin and devastating health consequences for their child.

This is a huge part of why I’m running to represent ID-02 in Congress. I believe we must have universal healthcare in this country. I believe it is one of the most basic things a country should provide for its people.

If you believe, like I do, that healthcare is a human right, please donate to my campaign for Congress, and help me flip this seat BLUE.

All parents should feel as confident as I did this week when managing my son’s emergency. Medical care should not be a privilege for a select few, nor should it be tied to a job.

It is a human right that must be made available to us all.

I can’t think of a better Father’s Day gift than knowing my son is going to be ok. I know all the dads out there feel the same, and it’s my wish for all of you.

David Roth is a single, gay dad running for Idaho’s Second Congressional District. We’re going up against a GOP incumbent who has been in this seat for almost 25 years. It’s time for change in Idaho, and our grassroots campaign is building on the momentum that began in David’s race for U.S. Senate last cycle. The GOP is not planning to defend this seat, so we plan to take it from them and help Democrats retake the House majority next year. We’d love your support to build a solid campaign to bring progress to Idaho and the country.
