Don’t worry, our SEEC Members are working to solve it:

John,

We’ve got our wires crossed (around the energy grid, that is).

Here’s the situation: The most effective way to reach our emission goals and avoid a climate catastrophe is rapidly switching to clean energy nationwide. And thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, we’re in the middle of a major wind and solar power boom! But now we’re facing another hurdle: how do we plug this new power source into the grid?

It’s not as simple as it sounds, John. When we talk about “the grid,” we talk like it’s one centrally managed piece of infrastructure. The reality is that it’s separated into several regional sections that are managed by a web of operators and other competing interests, which doesn’t make it easy to transfer clean energy produced in remote areas to big cities. In fact, to make that happen, our national grid needs thousands of new high-voltage transmission lines.

Simply put, if we are going to transition to 100% clean energy by 2035, we need a MASSIVE reboot to our energy grid.

The shortcomings of our grid make sense: a system that was built around coal and gas must get an upgrade to accommodate a new energy landscape.

But here’s the rub: a bottleneck in our electrical grid system is stalling work to get its revamp up and running. And if we can’t iron out these issues soon, estimates show that 80% of estimated emission reductions from our current clean energy plans simply won’t happen.

Have no fear; our SEEC Members are on it. The Co-Chairs of SEEC’s Clean Energy Deployment Task Force, Reps. Sean Casten and Mike Levin are working on their Clean Electricity Transmission Acceleration Act of 2023. This legislation would streamline the approval process and give the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission new authorities to prioritize emission reduction projects — giving us a path forward from the clean power gridlock.

We’re ready for clean energy, and SEEC Members are working to make its deployment possible. Chip in now so they can continue problem-solving our grid problems to usher in a sustainable future.

Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
