June 18, 2023

Dear Georgian,

I want to wish a happy Father’s Day to all of our Eighth District dads. I will be enjoying the day with my family, and I hope y’all get to do the same!

Tomorrow is Juneteenth, which recognizes the freedoms won for enslaved people across the United States 159 years ago.

Last week we celebrated the U.S. Army's 248 birthday. Our soldiers have been defending and protecting our great nation for almost two and a half centuries, and we are extremely grateful for their service. It was also Flag Day on Wednesday, where we observed our beloved symbol of freedom and liberty to the American people.

As always, my staff and I are here to help. If you need assistance with a federal agency or have comments or concerns to share with me, please do not hesitate to call my Warner Robins, Tifton, or Washington, D.C. offices. To receive frequent updates, I encourage you to visit my website, like my Facebook page, follow me on YouTube, and follow me on Twitter.

Sincerely,

Standing Up for Second Amendment Rights

Earlier this year, the ATF issued a ruling to ban the possession and purchase of pistol stabilizing braces. This gross overreach punishes law-abiding citizens, overrides ten years of Federal guidance, and tramples our Second Amendment rights.

In response, I cosponsored H.J. Res. 44, which disapproves and nullifies the rule issued by the DOJ and ATF through a legislative process established by the Congressional Review Act. The Congressional Review Act allows Congress to undo a regulatory agency's action within 60 days through a "motion of disapproval" that cannot be blocked by a filibuster in the Senate. During this review period, Congress can pass a joint resolution to overrule a regulation before it goes into effect.

Last week, the House passed H.J. Res. 44 with my support by a vote of 219-210. This legislation is now on the way to the Senate, and I hope they stand up for your Second Amendment rights and pass this resolution soon.

As a gun owner, avid hunter, and a lifetime member of the NRA, I will continue to fight to preserve our Second Amendment rights and our ability to secure the safety of our homes and families.

Restoring Fiscal Responsibility

Republicans are working to stop government overspending, and this past week we passed the REINS Act, which reasserts Congress’s authority to control spending and prevents the executive branch from passing "major rules" without the approval of Congress. Major rules would have an annual effect on the economy of $100 million or more.

President Biden has authorized regulations that have cost taxpayers trillions of dollars without Congressional oversight, such as his costly student loan bailout, which is the last thing our country needs while we have over $31 trillion in debt. This legislation will restore fiscal accountability to the executive branch and allow Congress to have the final say in our nation's spending. I urge the Senate to take it up quickly.

Combatting the Progressive Climate Agenda

Democrats nationwide have proposed banning gas cooking appliances as part of their progressive climate agenda. Nearly 187 million Americans use natural gas appliances, and forcing households to switch to more expensive alternatives is unreasonable.

To prevent any bans on household appliances, the House passed H.R. 1640, the Save Our Gas Stoves Act, by a vote of 249-181. I supported this legislation, and I will continue to combat the left's climate agenda.

Washington Examiner | House passes legislation to rein in the administrative state

"The House voted on Wednesday to approve what would be an enormous clawback of government bureaucracy and the administrative state.

The House voted 221-210 to pass the Regulations from the Executive In Need of Scrutiny, or REINS, Act. Introduced by Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL), the legislation seeks to hand Congress more power over the rulemaking process, which proponents said has been used excessively to enact sweeping changes in the United States without the backing of lawmakers."
