Happy Father’s Day, Colorado!
I’ve been a brewer, a geologist, a Mayor, Governor, and a U.S. Senator. But do you know what’s been the best job of all? Being a father!
In fact, last December our newest son Jack was born. The experience has given me an entirely new perspective on fatherhood. There’s nothing I love more than coming home from a busy day at the Capitol, sitting down next to baby Jack, and plucking away on the banjo while he smiles up at me.
(On the left is an old photo of me and my oldest son Teddy, and on the right is baby Jack – I swear he’s sweeter than he looks!)
It’s an experience I don’t take for granted, especially since I lost my father when I was 8.
Like so many who have a lost a parent, I always experience Father’s Day as a mix of emotions: an ache for the years unspent with my dad and the milestones he’ll never know about, mingled with gratitude for the years I’ll spend watching my sons grow into the men they’re meant to be.
Everything I do is for my sons. My dad used to call us kids his jewels – and now that I’m a father, I get what he meant. I'm the luckiest dad in the world and I am so blessed to watch my boys grow up.
So Happy Father's Day to all the fathers and individuals who hold the responsibility of "father" in someone's life. It’s the best job in the world!
