Gov. Greg Abbott ends mandated water break for Texas construction crews as temperatures rise into triple digits
Texas, where more workers die from high temperatures than nearly anywhere else in the country, has nixed mandated water breaks for construction crews, thanks to a terrible new law signed by Republican Gov. and man who spends his entire life in air-conditioned confines Greg Abbott. The law nullifies ordinances enacted by Austin in 2010 and Dallas in 2015 that established 10-minute breaks every four hours so that construction workers can drink water and protect themselves from the sun and prevents other cities from passing such rules in the future.

The embattled trans community won a hard-fought, albeit temporary, victory in Indiana when US District Court Judge James Patrick Hanlon issued an order stopping the state's ban on puberty blockers and hormones for transgender minors from taking effect as scheduled on July 1. The Republican anti-queer crusade sweeping the nation sadly marches on, though, as at least 20 GOP-led states have now enacted laws restricting or banning medical treatments for transgender minors.

Minneapolis is quietly trying to throw out the lawsuit against the cop who killed Amir Locke
Fresh on the heels of an absolutely scathing federal report highlighting years of systemic racism and excessive use of force within the police department, the city of Minneapolis is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit against the police officer who senselessly killed Amir Locke during a botched raid in February 2022. Locke, a 22-year-old Black aspiring musician, was sleeping on a couch in his cousin’s Minneapolis home, a handgun at his side, when SWAT officers entered without knocking early in the morning. The officers were executing a search warrant related to a homicide, but Locke was not part of the investigation. Still, Officer Mark Hanneman shot him dead within 10 seconds. The killing, which occurred during the trial of three officers who participated in the murder of George Floyd, drew thousands of protesters.

Press freedom and civil liberties defenders condemned what legal experts called the unconstitutional conviction of two Asheville, North Carolina, journalists for violating a public park curfew while covering the police eviction of unhoused people on Christmas night 2021. "We don't have secret police in the United States. Officers are not entitled to operate without press and public scrutiny just because it's dark out," Freedom of the Press Foundation advocacy director Seth Stern said in a statement. "The Constitution requires that journalists be given sufficient access to public land to report the news, no matter the time."
