As a kid, I was always by my dad's side. He taught me. He joked with me. And He was a great example for me.

(Ignore the Sixers jersey. I was very young.)

When I was growing up, my dad guided people through the confusing process of finding a mortgage. He helped people reach their dreams of owning a home, and he was great at it.

Then, in 2008, the financial crisis hit – thanks in part to a bunch of dishonest mortgage brokers – and overnight, his work dried up.

My father went to the office every day and worked harder than ever to provide for our family. Still, times got tougher and tougher. I could see the worry on his face. I could feel the load on his shoulders.

My dad came home late from work one evening, and I found him in the kitchen fixing himself some dinner. In the light of the refrigerator I asked him dad, "Will we have to move off of Long Island?"

He pulled his head out of the fridge with some cold cuts in one hand and a block of cheese in the other. He looked a little surprised. But he sat me down at the table and he told me something I'll never forget. He said to me:

"Josh, when you work hard, you will always find a way. And when people you love need you to, you'll work even harder. I love your mom and your brothers and you more than anything. And there is no way I am going to let us lose our home."

And my dad was right. He did everything he could. He sacrificed and worked his tail off. And he made sure we didn't have to leave our home.

I have a lot to be thankful for, but today, Father's Day, I am most grateful for my dad – the man who taught me how to have grit, perseverance, and a hardworking spirit.

Whether school board or legislature or Congress, our community depends on – and deserves – elected officials who'll devote themselves to service with that same grit, perseverance, and hard work. And since I was first elected to public service at age 18, I've tried to live up to my dad's example.

I am running for Congress because my dad was right: when people you love need support, you will work even harder. I love my community, and I'm working even harder to take back Congress and to give New Yorkers the representation we deserve.

Happy Father's Day,

Josh
