Hey John,
I’m Marissa, When We All Vote’s Director of Corporate Partnerships, and like some of you, many of my life lessons came from teachings passed down by my father. From showing me how to set up my first bank account to picking me up from every after-school activity possible (there were a lot!), my dad has always been a rock for me to lean on.
The biggest lesson I learned was the importance of voting. Even though we didn’t have conversations around politics in my home, voting was just something we did — no questions asked. My dad always pushed me to be an active participant in my community. Running for student-led organizations, competing for scholarships, and taking on community projects were just some of the things he encouraged me to do in order to find my own voice, lead in my community, and most importantly, be a good neighbor and friend. Looking back on these moments reminds me of the role my father played in shaping the work I do today.
