National Health Expenditure Projections

In an ahead-of-print article released this, the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS) reports their annual projections of national
health expenditures
<[link removed]>
for the period 2022-31.

Over 2022-31, Sean Keehan and his CMS colleagues report that national
health expenditures are projected to grow 5.4 percent, on average, and
account for roughly 20 percent of the economy by 2031.

The authors anticipate the insured share of the population will exceed
92 percent through 2023 "and then decline towards 90 percent as COVID-19
public health emergency coverage requirements expire."

Beginning in 2024, out-of-pocket spending for Medicare's Part D
enrollees is projected to decrease due to the prescription drug
provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, resulting in savings
to Medicare beginning in 2031.
