This week marked the 11th anniversary of the Obama era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
DACA is the perfect example of a moral exercise of presidential power in the face of an inactive and intransigent Congress. It’s also an illustration of the neoliberal thinking that has limited our political imaginations and led to half-measures that don’t address the root cause.
For the last 11 years, DACA has covered young people who came here as children with an undocumented status. America is their home, and they are Americans. But the protection that DACA offered them has not protected their parents and other family members from expulsion, and it has left them in legal limbo. That is intolerable, and it’s time to change it.
I support legislative reforms that include a full path to citizenship not only for the nearly 600,000 DACA recipients, but for all undocumented immigrants who do not have serious criminal background issues. I would also work to reduce the cost of naturalization and increase resources to help people navigate that process more easily. Furthermore, our foreign policy should seek to ensure economic stability in other countries so that people do not need to seek economic refuge in the United States.
My vision for immigration justice is forged by years of experience working with people in the margins of our society, and the lessons I’ve taken from my brother who works as an immigration attorney.

Those who scapegoat immigrants, like all demagogues throughout history, are demonizing others to increase their own power. The hardening of the American heart is far more dangerous than the softening of our borders.
My administration will:
Support comprehensive immigration reform and provide a timely, ethical, transparent, and straightforward path to citizenship.
Expand the number of visas available to immigrants.
End Family Separation and reunite families torn apart by the current and prior administrations.
Speed up general immigration processing by expanding staffing and funding immigration courts.
Abolish ICE and establish an Office of Citizenship, Refugees, and Immigration Services under the Department of Labor. Redirect all funding to processing centers that connect/provide immigrants and refugees with resources and housing, work, and healthcare upon arrival.
Hold accountable all ICE and Customs and Border Protection agents who committed human rights violations and close private detention centers.
Pass the No Ban Act to prevent any future president from implementing another Muslim/African Travel Ban such as the one put in place by Trump.
Expand LGBTQ Protection for immigrants and asylum seekers.
Repeal the “Patriot Act” and reject the use of facial recognition surveillance programs that are riddled with racial discrimination issues. ...and much more. You can read my full immigration platform here [[link removed]] .
Immigrating to America is not a crime. The modern immigrant is chasing the same dream of a better life that lured the ancestors of every American who isn’t descended from either enslaved people or Native Americans.
Today, too many immigrants come to America and are not made to feel welcome. Walls in our hearts are the most dangerous walls, and that is where we must bring them down.
Next time you’re at an immigrant-owned place of business, think of asking the owner where he or she came from. Learn their story, bring them into your heart.
That is how we will change America, not only through policy but also through love.
