John,
This Monday, we recognize Juneteenth — the day in 1865 that Union Gen. Gordon Granger reached Galveston, Texas, to deliver the news to enslaved African Americans that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed.
While our communities have celebrated this day of freedom for more than 150 years, Juneteenth often is missing from our history books. Our government recognized it as a federal holiday just two years ago — and polling shows that more than 60 percent of Americans know “nothing at all” or only “a little bit” about Juneteenth.1
That’s by design. Withholding information and pushing disinformation and misinformation have long been a historical tool of white supremacy to dismantle the growing power of Black folks and to stall movements for progress and liberation. You can see it today across the country as right-wing forces relentlessly push legislation and policies designed to shut down any conversation about race and gender in our classrooms and prevent students from understanding our nation’s full history.2
John, we know that knowledge equals power. So this Juneteenth, help us fight back against right-wing efforts to erase the truth. Make a contribution of $25 or more today to support our ongoing campaigns to defend Black history!
Defend Black History
Color Of Change is working across a range of areas to combat ultra-right forces — from battling the spread of hatred on social media and misinformation to keep Black people from voting, to fighting book bans aimed at keeping Black history out of classrooms and libraries.
We’re fiercely committed to running campaigns to protect our history, our educators and our students. Your support will help fuel our ongoing efforts to:
- Hold textbook publishers accountable for their role in providing students with accurate accounts of our history.
- Fight back against the State of Florida’s ban on AP African American Studies courses and other anti-CRT policies attempting to ban books across this nation.
- Put pressure on Big Tech companies and media outlets to combat the spread of misinformation and disinformation in the news and online.
But we’re up against powerful forces.
Color Of Change doesn’t take a dime from corporations or lobbyists that don’t share our values. Supporters like you provide so much of the means to fuel our work. This Juneteenth, let’s join together to celebrate how far we’ve come and recommit ourselves to the fight for liberation. Make a gift of $25 or more today!
