John, let’s talk
about mushrooms for a minute. (And if you’re already like “why should I
care”…please just hear me out? 🙏)

First things first, ‘shrooms are *amazing* crops — and not just the magic
ones. 😉

🍄 They’re a uniquely nutritious protein with disease-preventative +
cognitive-protective properties.

🍄 They’re too perishable to be imported, which means jobs for American
farmers. 

🍄 And yes, there is growing research into using psychedelic mushrooms in
therapeutic treatments for veterans + others with PTSD!

Now, unless you work in agriculture, you might not know that
Pennsylvania’s is the #1 mushroom-producing state in the country. (Fun
fact: Chester County farmers grow 60% of all mushrooms produced in the US
of A!!)

But under current U.S. law, PA’s mushroom farmers can’t access
federally-backed crop insurance policies. That means when their crops face
threats like pests or pollution, mushroom farmers don’t get the same
protection that other farmers do.

That needs to change. Recently, I joined my fellow PA Senator Bob Casey
and a bipartisan group of House colleagues to introduce the Protecting
Mushroom Farmers Act! This bill is a critical step to providing crop
insurance to mushroom farmers + protecting the livelihood of thousands of
Pennsylvanian farmers.

Still, why am I telling you all about mushrooms??

Because honestly, this bill of ours isn’t going to make headlines. 

The reality is, most of the important work we do in the Senate doesn’t. 

But you need to know I’m not in Congress to get my name into the news,
unlike many of my extreme colleagues on the far right. I’m *actually* here
to improve the lives of hardworking families — just like the ones in
Chester County who have passed down mushroom farms from generation to
generation.

From protecting our farmers, to raising the minimum wage, to tackling
corporate greed, I’m fighting like hell for workers + their families each
and every day.
