There’s a big reason the IL GOP is so invested in this rebrand – mail-in voting increases voter turn-out. The GOP continues to pay a heavy electoral price every cycle due to their misinformation about mail-in voting; thus, they are changing their tune. The IDCCA and our County Parties have always supported voting rights. Mail-in voting is an integral part of the right to vote. Expanding access to voting leads to more voter participation. Democrats believe everyone who is legally eligible to vote should have the opportunity to vote.
The IL GOP’s outlandish lies about mail-in voting backfired spectacularly, convincing many of their supporters their only option to vote successfully was to vote in person on a single Tuesday or not at all. Combined with the lack of enthusiasm for extreme GOP candidates, it contributed to Democratic victories. This changes when they embrace a fuller range of access to the ballot.
Election after election, the IDCCA and our County Parties have run extremely successful vote-by-mail programs and helped voters make their voices heard and exercise their right to vote.
In 2022, recipients of our targeted vote-by-mail campaign turned out at a rate of 75%, helping elect down-ballot Democrats and pass the Worker’s Rights Amendment. With millions of dollars being spent on many single races these days, it’s clear why the IL GOP is so desperate to run their own rebranded vote-by-mail program.
